Coping With Anxiety After Being Laid Off


Unfortunately in today’s society, we are largely defined by what we do for work. Although there are plenty of things that make people incredibly interesting, we tend to zoom in on one aspect about us: what we do for a living.


Due to this, it is no wonder that there are so many anxieties that surface around being laid off. In addition to the obvious financial concerns that may arise when you lose your job, there are also concerns about losing social capital. Regardless of what makes you anxious about work layoffs, the rationale is completely understandable, and you are not alone in these feelings. Coping with anxiety after being laid off

The good news about being laid off is that you are not the first person to experience it!   • Focus on what you can control: Unfortunately, we cannot control what other people will do. This includes whether you will be laid off and how long it will take until you get another job. You can, however, control how you react to the situation.

  • Work on your productivity: Now that you have excess time on your hands, you have the perfect opportunity to focus on yourself. Although you should be dedicating plenty of time to updating your resume and finding job interviews, be sure you schedule some time to show yourself love. Finish that book you have been meaning to read or complete that crafting project!

  • Practice patience: While this time in between jobs is likely going to be full of uncertainty, consider it a lesson in practicing patience. Give yourself some grace and try not to be too hard on yourself.

What to do outside of focusing on work

You can certainly spend plenty of time being productive in your professional life after being laid off. But, you cannot spend all of your time focused on work! Now is the perfect time to give some of your other hobbies some attention or discover a new one.


Maybe go on the hike you have always wanted to do but never had time for, or simply spend more time in your garden. Although it may be easier said than done, try not to compare yourself to other individuals. Remember, focus on what you can control; what others do is outside of your reach.
